MACHANS BEACH PROFILE
Situated within the Barron River delta, Machans Beach is located ten to fifteen minute’s drive North of Cairns’ CBD & is a community of around 1000 inhabitants in about 400 homes. Unlike many modern suburbs built at break-neck pace within a few short years, to be inhabited by exclusive and higher income families, Machans Beach has thrived with a character of its own maintaining an eclectic and diverse mix of residents and housing styles, ranging from small workers cottages to million dollar plus beachfront homes.
Machans Beach has fortunately escaped the unrelenting development of North Queensland. Fortunate because it continues to be a residential suburb without large hotels and is devoid of the massive influx of people as seen in other northern beaches suburbs.
Through the action of its residents and the Community Association, it has been possible to fight proposals from developers to transform Machans Beach into a money generating playground and this has helped to shape the laid back and easy life style of this suburb.
Machans Beach was first surveyed in 1885, making it one of the oldest beach-front communities along the northern beaches of the greater Cairns area. This community owes its name to Richard and Cristina Machan and their family; who in search of a new life purchased about 100 hectares of land in the early 1920’s. They were some of the first white settlers in the area. Back in those days Machans Beach looked very different and thick bush stood between the beach and the cane fields. The sandy beach was about 40 meters wide and families used to live in small shacks on the beach, above the high tide line. In its early days Machans Beach was considered a popular fishing and holiday destination amongst Cairns residents and people used to come for a day or more to enjoy the peace and quiet.
By the 1940¹s the community was a mixture of permanent and holiday homes. Although its popularity declined during the war years, by the early 1950s it had regained its place as a holiday destination of choice. During the 1960’s the community developed quite rapidly and many people, impressed by the friendliness of its residents and the easy going pace of life, decided to make Machans Beach their home. Several of these families still reside in this idyllic beach side community and the atmosphere and friendliness have survived, despite the hectic pace of modern life.
